PALMERSTON Under the presidency of the Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway), a large number of local citizens, representative of the Palmerston Borough Council, the Waihemo County Council, the Palmerston Retailer ( s' Association, and other local and sporting bodies, foregathered in the Town Hall on Monday night to bid farewell to Constable P. J. Maggin, who is leaving for Christchurch after spending nine years in the town. The customary toasts were enthusiastically honoured, several songs were sung, and the Mayor presented Constable Maggin with a handsome wallet on behalf of those present, complimenting Mr Maggin and his high sense of duty and> remarking on the popularity that had always been his. The Palmerston Salvation Army presented an enjoyable concert before a good attendance in the Town Hall on Tuesday night. The Oamaru Salvation Army Band had been engaged for the evening, and, with assisting artists, presented a varied entertainment. QUEENSTOWN The weather during the past week has been very seasonable, with a maximum of sun.. Althoueh frosty at night, only 11 degrees have been registered at the most. A heavy thaw occurred during' the past two days. Two basketball matches were played during this week. St. Joseph's defeated Rovers B by 35 to 3 and Arrow A beat Arrow B by 17 to 9. The second round of the senior Rugby fixtures was completed on Saturday, when Country defeated Queenstown by 9 to 6. The three clubs in the competition have equal points, so that future matches'will be watched with keen interest. Country juniors had a victory over Queenstown juniors by 13 points to 5. A Southern Districts representative team will visit Queenstown on July 14 and engage in a match with a Wakatipu Sub-union combination.

An old resident of the town passed away at the Lake County Hospital, Frankton, on Tuesday morning in the person of Mrs Lydia Jane Green, widow of Mr Albert Green. The deceased was 68 years of age, and was a native of Arrowtown. She spent the greater part of her life in Queeristown, where she reared a family of one son and three daughters. Her son is on the Post and Telegraph staff of the Dunedin office. Mrs Bert Beer (Queenstown), Mrs Colin Aitchison (Dunedin), and Mrs A. Harrison (Otira) are the daughters. The deceased was of a very retiring nature. Mr Bert Beer, who hag acted in the capacity of ship's carpenter in connection with the Lake Wakatipu service for close on 25 years, went into retirement on Saturday last. Mrs J. C. Knowles, late lessee of the Earnslaw Hotel, Glenorchy, who, with her late husband, conducted the hotel business for some 20 years, was accorded a farewell last week prior, to her taking up her future residence at Pembroke. She was presented with a beautiful chiming clock and a Pyrex dish mounted on a silver stand. Mr T. Kennett, who made the presentation, referred to the many estimable qualities possessed by Mrs Knowles, foremost among these being her charity. Mrs Knowles will be greatly missed at Glenorchy. ' A tremendous improvement has recently been effected at the east end of Camp street. The town creek has been neatly walled in stone and a traffic bridge erected on the opposite side to the present one. The upper part of the street has also been cleared of unsightly growth and stones and levelled off. There is little to report in mining. The Oxenbridge Gold Company, and Central Shotover Company are being hampered by the frost. The former is preparing to do some sluicing when the river is low. Skippers, Ltd., is still sinking in its first paddock, and the manager hopes to have a wash-up in 0t fortnight's time. There is considerable speculation as to what sort of return will be forthcoming, especially when the previous owner of the ground forecast a handsome yield. It is understood that an old wall was discovered in the paddock. TAPANUI The twenty-sixth annual meeting •of the Tapanui Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Tuesday evening, when every officer and fireman was present. Captain Strong presided. The secretary read the annual report, which stated that during the year Captain Strong had been presented with the association's 25-year gold star. All the gear and equipment was in first class order. The finances of the brigade were in a flourishing condition. The following officers were elected: — Captain, E. Strong; lieutenant, 0. _L. Munyard; foreman, R. Munyard-.junior foreman, W. Lischner; secretary, R. Duff; auditor, Mr W. 11. Quinn. The meeting resolved that the rules of the brigade be revised. It was unanimously agreed that the. Lyon's Shield competition in future be a standard dressing event. Lieutenant Munyard reported on the affairs of the Southern Districts' Sub-association. RANFURLY The Maniototo County Council has decided, subject to subsidy, to carry out the following works for the current year: — Linburn road, first gravelling; Cambrian township, 4ft culvert; Waipiata-Kokonga, 4ft culvert; Reefs road, first gravelling; Kyeburn bridge, Young's Crossing, M'Nally's road, first gravelling; Allison's lane, first gravelling; Hogburn, channel protection, Naseby; Oturehua-Blackstonc, second gravelling; Spec Creek, bridge; Spain's Creek-Auripo road, bridge; Auripo road to Becks, rock formation; Eweburn, bridge; Price's Creek, Hyde, 4ft culvert: White Sow Creek, bridge; Eden Creek, bridge; St. Bathans-Becks Downs, first gravelling; Rock and Pillar, bridge; White Sow Valley, second gravelling; Shaw's bridge, extension. The Ranfurly Miniature Rifle Club held their weekly shoot on Monday night. There was a good attendance, and the shootinff was of a high standard, the average being 76.4. The winner of the button for the best shot off the rifle was A. H. Macdonald, and the handicap button was won by P. M'Connell. The best targets for the night were as follows:—A. LAUDER The annual meeting of the Lauder Gun Club was held on June 12. Mr A. Brown was reappointed president, and .Mr T. Clouston secretary. It was decided to hold the opening shoot of the season on June 27 for the Proven Memorial and £3. The 1034 Otago championship has been allotted to the club.

CROMWELL The Cromwell Borough Endowment, an area of 1000 acres in the centre of Cromwell Flat, on the supposed line of a -deep channel between Cromwell and Kawarau Gorge, has figured prominently in mining applications since the recent boom. It has more recently been a subject for some public debate. The original of the land was held by the Cromwell Development Company at £2O per year, and the validity or otherwise of this lea6e has also been much discussed during' the last six months. This lease expires shortly. A new lease for 21 years at an upset rental of £45 was. offered yesterday. At this sale there was no inquiry from mining interests, the only bid coming from the Cromwell Development Company at the upset, at which price the new lease was secured. The spell of hard frost broke early in the week, when a heavy fog settled over the valley, with an occasional light, misty Vain. The rivers are at a fairly low level. , ALEXANDRA The Alexandra Golf Club's competitions are progressing. The Ladies' Rose Bowl Competition, first round, resulted as follows:—Miss V. A Cockburn, 99—36—63; Mrs R. Tohill, 88—24—64; Mrs C. Nightingale, 96—32—64; Miss E. M'Donald, 101 —36—65. In the men's competition for the Cuthbertson Cup the winner has proved to be W. B.
