TAXI FARES

CITY COUNCIL'S CT-LAW. The first step in passing a new by-law fixing the maximum and minimum fares for taxis was taken by the City Council at its meeting last evening, and will be confirmed by the council four weeks hence. Dealing with this matter the following report from the General Committee was placed before the council by Cr MTndoe:— The committee has given considerable attention to the question of a revision of the taxi fares to operate in terms cf licenses issued to taxi drivers. Conferences have been held with representatives of the taxi drivers licensed under our by-law, and the committee now submits a revised schedule of fares as set out on the plan. The amounts shown on the map are to be the maximum fares chargeable in the respective areas delineated, while, in terms of the amended legislation passed during the last session of Parliament, the minimum fare that it is lawful to charge is to be 6d less in each case than the amount shown on the plan. For example, within the area marked* 2s such fee in that case shall not exceed the amount named, while, likewise, no fare less than Is 6d could lawfully be charged. As the existing by-law, passed before the amended legislation, provides only for a maximum fare, it will be necessary to amend the by-law to provide also {6r a minimum charge to bring the by-law in lino with the recent legislation.
