Buchan, who has recently been transferred to 2nd Cadet Battalion, Otago Regiment, from the Hauraki Regiment, is at present interesting himself in the formation of a cadet company at the Albany Street Intermediate School. Thirty lads have enlisted so far, and from till accounts the company, when properly organised, will be a valuable addition to the 2nd Cadet Battalion. Christian Brothers’ Company The Christian Brothers’ Company now parades at the Drill Hall instead of at the school. All ranks are showing keen interest in their wqrlf, and steady progress is being made in the Vickers, Lewis gun and infantry sections. Instruction Classes Cadet n.e.o.’s are attending Lewis gun, infantry, and signalling instruction classes each Monday of the present term. It is hoped that these courses will have a beneficial effect on the high standard displayed by the cadets when on parade EARL ROBERTS TROPHY. Otago Boys’ High School Team The Otago Boys’ High School team held an elimination shoot at Pelichet Bay range last week for the purpose of selecting a 1934 team to represent the school I in the shoot for the Earl Roberts Trophy. In spite of unfavourable weather conditions, shooting was of a uniformly high standard. The points scored totalled 270—25.5 more than were registered in last year’s elimination shoot. The following team was selected: —Corporal D. Haig (fire leader). Regimental Quartermastersergeant R. P. Wallace, and Cadets J. O. Hall, J. A, Cowie. and M. D. Schofield. The team is at present carrying out coucentrative practice for the "Victory Challenge Shield—a competition in which it gained second place last year. RIFLE SHOOTING. Otago Rifle Association The fourth annual meeting of the Otago Rifle Association was held on October 20, 1868, in the Shamrock Hotel. Captain M’Farland presided, and amongst those present were Captain and Adjutant Atkinson, Captain Copeland, Lieutenant Dobbie, and Sergeant Hislop. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The treasurer’s report was received and adopted. Lieutenant-colonel Cargill was elected president of the association. and his Worship the Mayor (Mr Thomas Birch), vice-president. The secretary and treasurer were re-elected, votes of thanks being accorded them for past service. It was resolved to reduce the number of members of the council to seven, and the following gentlemen were elected: —Captain Atkinson, Messrs Copeland, Dobbie, Moodie, Paterson, Dunn, and Garrick. Messrs Carrick, Dobbie, Copeland, and Atkinson were appointed a committee to collect subscriptions. The shooting for the Government and representative prizes will take place in February nest, and the association meeting was fixed for the end of January. A silver medal has been sent by the Home association, and it will be shot for.—(To bo continued.) Sensational Marksmanship In a recent issue of the N.R.A. Journal there appeared an article dealing with feats of marksmanship of which the following will be regarded as unique:— “ Among deliberate feats of marksmanship one‘of the most sensational was that of the-late H. Ommundsen, who backed himself to make seven successive inners at 600 yards, and not only performed the feat but placed his inners right round the bullVeye, starting at 12 o’clock and ending up at about 10 o’clock. Ommundsen also once made a possible of magpies in Australia. Though that was not intentional, it can certainly be regarded as r.n extraordinary feat.” A Triple Possible Recently Major D. L. M'Sweeuey scored a three-range possible at Bisley and which was the first of the season. It was also hie first shoot of the season. According to reports, scoring was very high on that particular day, for there was an excellent light all day long; and, though the wind was distinctly fresh, it was fairly steady, and the changes were easy to read. It will interest local marksmen to learn that the N.R.A. of Great Britain has lately increased the size of the bull’s-eyes at 200, 300, 500, and 600 yards. Even with the increased size of the bull, Major M’Sweeney’s score is an excellent one.

Barrel! Gauges The firm of Messrs A. J. Parker, Birmingham, England, is now offering excellent barrel gauges at 3s 6d each. They are true to the values engraved on them, and, a# they are chamfered off at both, ends of the measuring portion, there can be no fear that in using them the barrel will bo damaged. Governor-Genera! of South Australia

It will be distinctly pleasing to riflemen of South Australia to learn' that Majorfeneral Winston Dugan, C. 8., CAI.G., 1.5.0., has been appointed GovernorGeneral of their State. General Dugan has been an ex-officio member of the National Rifle Association Council of Great Britain, representing the Territorial Army Rifle Association, of which he is vice-chairman, since 1931. His interest in rifle shooting is well known, and .he has been largely instrumental in bringing T.A. Rifle Association’s schemes, for* permanent home at Bisley to fruition. The riflemen of South Australia should be very happy in this appointment, for they will find in their Governor-designate a real friend and supporter. General Dugans long and distinguished military career is an outstanding example to young soldiers of what determination,..singleness of purpose, and devotion to duty can accomplish, and proves that elimination by examination does not invariably, produce the best men. Undeterred by failing for the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, at the age of IS, he enlisted in the Grenadier Guards, obtained his commission in the Lincolnshire Regiment during the South African War, commanded the Royal Irish, the Worcestershire Regiment, and a brigade during the Great ’War, besides holding numerous staff appointments, including A.D.C. to the King, and, becoming a major-general in 1930, was given- the command of the Ist London Division in. 1931. *
