BALCLUTHA On Alonday and yesterday teachers from South Otago to the number of 60 underwent a course in art at the Balelutha Public School under the directorship of Air J. A. Ataslorton, of Christchurch. This necessitated the closing of the schools in the district for two days.

■ Airs Rebecca Espie, who died last week at the age of 80, was one of Kaitangata’s oldest residents, having lived in the mining township for a period of 52 years. She was born at Wishaw, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in the ship Waitangi 55 years ago, and after three years’ residence in Canterbury removed to Kaitangata with her husband. After the death of her husband 35 years ago Airs Espie moved from the Castle Hill end of the township to the property now occupied by her son, Air Thomas Espie, and in the shop adjoining Commenced a drapery business in conjunction with her son. The business prospered, and 25 years ago the business owned by Air F. T. Poole was purchased, and in those larger premises it was still carried on. Airs Espie is survived by three sons—Alessrs Thomas and Andrew (Kaitangata). Anthony (Invercargill)—and four daughters—viz., Airs W. Falconer (Owaka), Airs D. Alurdoch (Brighton). Airs J. H. Hay, and Aliss Elizabeth Espie (Kaitangata).
