OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS

. ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Otngo Early Settlers' Association was held last evening, the president, Mr J. J. Mallard, presiding. Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman said the association had experienced another very successful year, although it had ended with a small debit balance. As against this the subscriptions had exceeded those of last year, and several life members had contributed to the funds. The museum and art gallery continued to be of great interest. Overseas visitors had been greatly impressed and interested, and the opinion had been expressed that the museum and art gallery compared more than favourably with any such i.rt galleries to be found overseas. School children and teachers had attended the Pioneer Hall in large numbers and had taken, great interest in the art gallery. The association had done everything to impress on the children what they owed to the early settlers and pioneers of Gtago. After reading the balance sheet, Mr Crosby Morris said it was not generally known that the association required a fairly large sum of money to meet its expenditure. Every effort had been made to reduce the expenditure during the past year. They should not be down-hearted, and it was hoped that the City Council would make a reasonable grant this, year. The association had an asset of which the city should be proud.. The amount .received from the City Council last year was £25, and he did not think the council fully appreciated the good work the association was carrying out.

The report and balance sheet were adopted. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr J. J. Mallard; vice-presidents—Messrs E. C. Hazlctt, J. W. Patton, W. Nicolson. J. Brown, J. Hope, and Crosby Morris; treasurer, Mr E. Webster; committee— Messrs J. A. Paterson, J. Wallace, W. J. Strong, A. F. Cheyne, H. Baron, D. J. Calder, A. Eccles, W. H. Fercns, R. S. J. A. Macdonald, C. C. Robertson, J. C. H. Somerville, and G. E. Thomson; auditors, Messrs R. A. Duthie and \V. Nicolson.

A vote of thanks was passed to the Otago Daily Times and Evening Star for assistance given to the association during the year, and also to the association's staff for its excellent work.
