THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” DUNEDIN, FRIDAY, MAY 22, 1863.
SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.
(BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) Port Chalmers, May 21st, 6 p.m. Helena, from London, has arrived at anchorage. Brings 900 tons cargo to numerous consignees. No passengers. Reports no vessels. The following paragraph relative to the Canterbury Railway we extract from,, the Lyttelton Times: —" We understand' that very satisfactory progress is being made in Melbourne with the manufacture of the carriages and waggons, and a large portion of them are expected here in about two months. As the contractors j have advices of the shipment of a large] quantity of the permanent way materials, ■ it is evident that, unless some unfore- j seen circumstance occurs, the opening of the first portion of the Lyttelton and Christchurch Railway will not be delayed beyond September next, the time | at first named by the contractors." We learu from the Southland'papers that Mr Lyal and five men have started for Dog Island to prepare for the erection of the iron lighthouse which may be shortly expected from England. The party are well found in stores, tools, etc., and were taken as far as the Bluff by Cobb and Co. v. The Separationists in Australia go about their work in a very spirited manner. The Age says:—"We observe from an advertisement in the Pastoral Times that some three dozen, more or less, of the four hundred said to be present have backed their opinions by round sums in the way of subscriptions. Thus we find four individuals at LSOO each, four at L2OO, two at Ll5O, and nineteen at LIOO. The remainder range from L 25 to LSO a head, and all on this agreement, that when the amount is above LlO, ten ,per cent, is payable now, the remainder when called upon by the council of the association, by nine instalments." The Provincial Government of Southland have transmitted orders to England for the necessary materials and plant required for the Invercargill and Bluff Railway.
