BYRD EXPEDITION

LEADER REPORTS ALL WELL DAILY WALK FOR EXERCISE. LITTLE AMERICA, May 18. (Received May 20, at 5.5 p.m.) From the Boiling advance base Admiral Byrd continues to report all well, with the temperature fluctuating between 20 and 50 below. It is revealed that despite the fact that the shack is buried in snow Admiral Byrd still takes his daily walk for exercise. As there is nothing in the nature of a landmark near, the shack he carries a bundle of light flag poles, planting them occasionally to find his way back. He has completed an emergency tunnel in which to exist, in the event of being completely snowed in at the camp. Here the men still find much outdoor -work necessary, and it is a continual battle to protect the tractors, aeroplanes and other equipment from driving snow. The improvised shelters not being completely safe, adequate higher snow walls must be added continually. The classes of the "winter school of the Antarctic " opened this week under Dr Poulter, the various scientists instructing the men in the procedure which will follow during the 6pring explorations.
