GROCERS TO CEASE DONATIONS During the difficult times which have been experienced throughout the recent years of unemployment there has been no section of retail traders which has been more liberal in its efforts to assist those who are in the unfortunate position of being unable to obtain work at remunerative rates than the grocers. Besides bearing their full share of the taxation which the Government has imposed for the relief of the unemployed, the master grocers have responded freely to the appeals for help by relief depots, and pound a week schemes. The position has now been reached that the average grocer, largely because of the burdens imposed on him by taxation, cannot continue the voluntary contributions of past years. It has, therefore, been decided by the executive that members of the Master Grocers’ Association will not in future make donations of goods to relief organisations.

PAYMENT OF SUSTENANCE PUBLIC PROTEST SUPPORTED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 11. Support was given by the Makara County Council to-day to a resolution carried at a public meeting in Palmerston North protesting against sustenance payments to the unemployed instead of employment at the former rates in places where approved capital works cannot be found. A resolution was passed expressing the opinion that the Unemployment Board should find further avenues of work for the unemployed.
