WINTER MEETING OPENED CENTURY HURDLES TO INVICTUS. (Peb United I'rerh association.) WANGANUI, May 10. The Wanganui Jockey. Club's winter meeting was opened to-day in* showery weather, which later cleared to bright sunshine. The track was in excellent order, and the attendance was satisfactory. The totalisator under the twodividend system handled £8894 10s, compared with £8615 10s under the win and place . system laßt year. Double-figure dividends were returned by Alcides and West Tor. Leo Colossus, Tudor, De Trop, Snowball, Alcidus, and Full Throttle was • the order into the straight, where Alcidus forged ahead and held off Snowball's challenge. Tudor was fourth. '■ After going a mile Riotous and Bon Aryan piloted Don Erma, Tunbridge, and Manuiri over the double brush in the straight. Don Erma' ran up to. Riotous six furlongs from home, and was always doing it better than the favourite, but nearly came down at the last obstacle. Invictus shook Knollmere off and had a five-lengths' break on Million, Easterly, High Grader, and Knollmere at the half-mile. Million ran up to 'lnvictus on the turn, but the leader drew away. Lack, Kaihoro, ami Ida Merling were tbe leaders at six furlongs, but Ida Merling showed the way into the straight from Arvada, Speed, Lack, Senegal, Spiral, and Stitch. Speed overhauled Ida Merling at the distance, and then held off Spiral's challenge. Ida Merling just failed. Takakua, Stitch,"Arvada, and Lack were next. BOROUGH HACK HANDICAP.
