AEROPLANE ENGINES

GERMAN ORDER FOR ENGLAND FRANCE SEEKS EXPLANATION, LONDON, May 9. (Received May 9, at 10 p.m.) It is learned that the French Ambassador sought an explanation from the British Government with respect to recent German orders to British firms for 80 ; aeroplane engines, and received the reply that the Government always sought to discriminate between engines intended for military and civil use. Such discrimination was difficult in practice, especially in the case of a State disclaiming possession of any military aeroplanes. It was impossible in peace time to ban exports which were ostensibly of a commercial character.
