A DRAWN MATCH

AUSTRALIA v. LEICESTER GOOD INNINGS BY DAWSON v (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, May 8. The • match between Australia and Leicester was. drawn. Owing to the rain there was only an hour’s play before lunch. Armstrong and Dawson resumed Leicester’s second innings in a drizzle. I’leetwood-Smith’s length was erratic and included, over-pitched balls. Dawson beautifully drove him to the boundary, the only noteworthy stroke of. the morning. In the nest over from O’Reilly, Armstrong, who is an habitual leg-beforo victim, got. in front of one which slipped through quickly. Play was resumed after lunch, despite a continuous drizzle. Dawson and Berry scored freely, the bowlers becoming more and more handicapped by the wet ball, failing-to control length and spin. The match was a depressing spectacle. The. Australians were soaked and all wore two sweaters. Dawson and Berry added 100 in 90 minutes, Dawson showing particular strength on the leg side before Barnett, .made a splendid catch behind the wicket. Dawson had batted for 155 minutes, hitting 13. fours. Ho played a chanceless innings, and invariably chose the . right ball to hit. The . total, was three for 160. Four wickets then fell- in. quick succession, three of them being O’Reilly’s victims, and. with seven down for 175 there seemed a good’ prospect of Australia forcing a victory.

Runs, came freely, however, with Fleetwood-Smith on; His bowling was very ragged. O’Reilly pegged the bats-, men down,' but had ‘no further success before tea, rwhen the score stood at seven for 210. ■ The rain now ceased. ' Only a handful of people were present. They saw Leicester avert an innings defeat. Bradman appeared to make a mistake in faking -a new ball at 200 and giving it to -Ebeling arid M‘Cabe, as O’Reilly looked the only bowler likely to dismiss Leicester, and the new ball did not suit him". -Geary, after a bright innings, went out le£ before. Astill’s fighting innings made a draw certain. His unexpectedly stubborn resistance found the Australians still in the field when stumps were drawn. Leicester batted for 270 minutes.
