PALMERSTON NOTES

(From Oub Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, March 22. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The president (Mr' R. M'lntosh) presided over a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Dunback 'Rugby Football' Club. He complimented the players ,on carrying out their fixtures during last season in spite of the shortage of men and the difficulty with finance. The committee running the successful card evenings, he said, had made it possible to carry on. The annual report and balance sheet, the latter showing a small credit balance, were’ adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr R. M'lntosh; vice-presidents—Messrs C. S. Hewitt, A. Murray, sen., J. Brander, G. Philip, O. Derimead, and F. Wilson; secretary and treasurer, Mr A, Frater; club captain, Mr W. M'Lew; line, umpire, Mr F. Gibson; coach, Mr W. M'Lew; Genera! Committee —Messrs R. M'lntosh, A. Frater, L. M'Lew, W. M'Lew, A. Murray, C. Denmead, and the playing captain; selectors, Messrs F. Sutherland and A. Frater; delegates to Eastern Districts Rugby Football Sub-union, Messrs R. M'lntosh. and A. Murray, sen.; auditors,. Messrs .J. Brander and A. Murray. ' . ■ Opening day was fixed for April 7, on which day it was decided to try and arrange a match with the Palmerston Club. HOCKEY. The annual meeting of the Palmerston Ladies’ Hockey Club was held last night Mrs R. Kilgour presiding over a good attendance. Several new. members were elected. The annual balance sheet, showing a satisfactory credit balance, was adopted, and a vote of thanks passed to the secretary (Miss L. .Forrest) for her services. A vote of thanks was passed to the president for her work during the past year. It was decided to apply to the Borough Council for the nse of the recreation ground for play during the season, and to hold the opening day on April 28, when the Waikouaiti team would be invited for a friendly game. DEDICATION OP FLAG.

A special service will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church on Sunday when harvest thanksgiving and Palm Sunday will be celebrated. In addition the Rev. C. Melville Newton will dedicate’ a World Flag presented by the vicar and Mrs Newton to the Palmerston Girl Guide Company. PIG MARKETING.

The first consignment of pigs to be sent from this district under the auspices of the« Co-operative Pig-marketing Association of New Zealand was despatched yesterday to Mataura, where they will be killed and treated for export. Baconers and porkers combined, 21 pigs in all were handled by the district agent (Mr M. R. Service). VALEDICTORY.

The parishioners of St. Mary’s Church of' England, Palmerston, gathered last night in the parish hall to bid farewell to the Rev. C. Melville Newton, who is leaving the district for Kurow. The proceedings were commenced with a special service in the church, conducted by the Rev. Mr Newton. The address w r as given by Archdeacon J. D. Russell, who took for his text “Set Your Affection on Things Above,” while the Rev. D. Hillman rend the lesson. The large gathering then adjourned to the parish hall, where a musical programme was presented, songs being given by Mesdames W. M. Crockett and G. Burrow and Mr Noel Sutherland. A comic duet was presented by Misses N. Pickett and M. Capstick. and a humorous recitation by Miss N. Moodie; Mr C.. C. Apnieby contributed a violin solo. Mr G. W. Thomson mentioned the esteem in which Mr Newton was held locally, and referred to the enormous amount of work he had done for the church, having wiped off a large debt in his two years and a-half of office. He bad formed numerous clubs, and established a branch of the Church at his own expense at Macraes, which was outside his district. All would regret his departure. The speaker then made a presentation to Mr Newton. ■ The Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway) referred to Mr Newton as a “live wire.” and other eulogistic speakers were Messrs W. H. Hopkins. J. A. Jull. Archdeacon Russell, and the Rev. Mr Hillman. Mr Newton made a suitable replv. The Women’s Auxiliary and the Mother’s Union met recently to bid farewell to Mrs Newton, whom they presented with a gold-mounted fountain nen. suitably inscribed, as a mark of their esteem. BOWLING. Five rinks of ladies from the Phoenix Club. Oamaru, engaged the local_ ladies in a friendly match to-day. the visitors winning by 120 points to 101.
