BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held at Milton yesterday and was attended by the chairman (Cr H. M. Driver), Crs J. Clark. J. Allison, A. Renton, A. King,' D. M'Gregor, J. Boylari, V. Wilson, W. J. Sheat, and W. Moore. CORRESPONDENCE.' A letter was received from the secretary of the Matau River Board, wao drew attention to the fact that cattle were tramping in the edge of the Swamp road ditch, and asked the council to take steps to have the matter remedied.—-It was decided to notify the owners of the cattle that action would be taken in accordance with the board's request. Mr J. C. Campbell (Milton) wrote asking the council to put, in hand the work of improving the access to his property and offering to make a .contribution towards the cost of a bridge, and to gravel the road, should the council consent to carry out the work.*-A letter was received from the Minister'of Public Works (Mr J. Bitchener), who pointed out that even allowing for Mr Campbell's contribution, the Government's share of the work would cost £250, and the department could not, therefore, see its way clear to make any grant.—Members considered that the expenditure was not warranted, and the request was declined.

A letter was received from the Otago Motor Club asking the council to cousider clearing the hill on the railway property hear Glenore ptation, so as to obviate danger to traffic on the adjacent road. The Railways Department had promised, if the work were carried but by ' unemployed labour, to provide a supervisor and transport from Milton.— It was decided to reply stating that the council had no unemployed labour available, but that it would find a dump for the spoil if the Railways Department were to carry out the' work. An application by Mr J. Kennedy (Milburn) for permission to travel with a traction engine and sawmilling and chaffcutting plant on any of the county's roads was granted. ' A similar application by Messrs Hamilton Brothers (Milton) was also granted. Advice was received from Mr T. M. Ball, representing No. 17 district of the Main Highways Board, that the board had decided to replace a small bridge at Waihola with a reinforced concrete structure at an estimated cost of £4OO. The writer inquired whether the council would be prepared to contribute onethird of the cost.—lt was decided to advise the board that the council was unablo to contribute.

ABOLITION OF RIDING ACCOUNTS. The clerk submitted a report on the proposal to abolish the riding account system and replace it by the general account system as allowed under the Counties' Amendment Act, 1931. The report stated that the benefits from the change Vould be many and varied, whilst the disadvantages could be regarded as few. fhe counties operating the general account system in Otago Were Waitaki, Vincent and Lakes, and advice had been received from the clerks of the two first named counties that the change of system had been advantageotlß,_The clerk was' thanked for the report, consideration of which was deferred until a later meeting. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. .

The inspector (Mr J. H. Bateman) reported as follows on the work done in the various ridings during the month: — Balmoral No. 1 Riding.—The Punt road has been graded. Balmoral No. 2 Riding.—Mr H. B. Roulston has completed the grading on the road leading into his homestead, and a start has been made with the metalling. The contractor has completed the gravelling on Rutherford'9 road. Crichton Riding.—A culvert of 42inch concrete pipes has been put in, at Robson's, also one of 30-inch concrete pipes at M'Crostie's boundary on Kaitangata road.—Ruts have been filled _ on leading to Duthie's gravel pit. Matau Riding.r-Seventy-two yards of rock and six yards of gravel have been spread on Stirling dairy factory road. Inch Clutlia Riding.—Tenders have been called for gravelling Mosley's road and will be dealt with at this meeting. Kaitangata Riding—Formation work has been carried out on the Wangaloa to Coombe Hay road, and the gravelling contract will be commenced next week. Repair work has been done on WaronuiCoornbe Hay road and a 9-inch culvert put in at the Cliffs. Glenledi Riding.—Repair work has been done on the Grange Hill and 30 yards of metal spread.—The quarry has been opened up and metalling will be commenced on Borthwick's road next week with labour under No. 5 scheme. Waihola Riding.—Portions of two streets in Waihola Township have been formed, and widening work on Taieri Mouth road carried out with labour under No. 5 scheme. Mount Stuart Riding.—A start has been made with the gravelling contract at Table Hill and contract let for gravelling at Flett's. Tokomairiro Riding.—Metal crushing has been completed at M'Neill's, and ft

contract let for gravelling at Young e. Metal has been spread at Fiddes'Si .Tokoiti, also gravel on Peattie's road,— Complaints have been received about allies and rubbish being dumped on. a street at Helensbrook. General Account,—Two days .work, has been done on the canal bank in ire-; pairing slips. The decking: on' Kaitangata bridge is breaking up .and.' extensive repairs are required. • ' *, MAIN HIGHWAYS. Dunedin to invercargill (Mijton to Balclutha).—This section of highway has had the usual grading and water, tabling done between Hillehd road ahd Willocks's. , _, ~ < Balclutha to Kaitangata.—This highway has been graded twice. , Balclutha to Tuapeka MoUth.—This highway has been graded and is in fair order. ■ Stony Creek to Hillend.—This section of highway has been -graded.-. '■£ Clarksville to "Sprmgvale.—This section has been graded and a corner near Round Hill improved. r v Green Island/to Taien Mouth.—Three days' repair work has been done between the bridge and the store. The report was adopted.; FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £1224 0» 4d were * passed for payment. The clerk reported that the rates received to date amounted to £1961 13s lid, compared with £3IBO 3s lid for the corresponding period of last year,. , RANGER'S REPORT.
