SISTERS OF MERCY

BENEFIT CONCERT There was a very appreciative audience at the Coronation Hall, St. Kilda, ou Saturday evening, when a particularly attractive variety entertainment was given fey the Dunedin Commercial Travellers’ Troupe in aid .of the funds of the Sisters of Mercy, South Dunedin. The programme was gone through with the ease and expedition which have become characteristic of this troupe; and those present caught the - spirit of the evening so well that they joined spontaneously in some of the choruses. Two dancing specialty numbers by Miss Ethel Todd were very much appreciated, while Miss Dorothy Allan,_ singing “Ring, Bells, Ring ” and “ Harbour Night Song," and Miss Vanda Duncan, in singing “ Venetian Boat Song ” and , “ Our Lodger’s Such a Nice Young Man,” were accorded hearty applause. A novelty act by Min Wong was distinctly clever. The male members .of the troupe rendered a delightful variety of songs, instrumental numbers, humorous items and sketches. A magician’s act by the adroit Chang Ltr was warmly received. During the course of the'evening Mr A. Smiley, on behalf of the Sisters of Mercy, returned thanks to the troupe for staging the concert. It was unnecessary to enlarge on the great amount of g. d work which was being quietly done by the Sisters, he said. During the carnival held in November to raise funds for the Sisters of Mercy, the Commercial Travellers had been unable to arrange an entertainment to assist them, but they had very willingly consented to do so later. The Sisters were now very much indebted to them. The speaker could not teeull any occasion on which. the troupe had refused to assist a worthy cause •wmm called upon; and, what was more, rimy performed for everybody and for nothing irrespective of creed or demoninatiou. Mr G. Mearns, replying, said that the travellers had been pleased to help the cause of the' Sisters of Mercy, and reiterated that it had. always been their policy to assist any worthy object, no matter to. what creed or denomination the organisers belonged.
