BRING-AND-BUY SALE
GARDEN PARTY AT NORTH-EAST VALLEY. An enjoyable afternoon was spent at the residence of the Misses Begg, Selwyn street, North-East Valley, on Saturday, the occasion being a bring and buy sale and garden party combined. The object was to augment the funds of the NorthEast Valley Women’s Christian Temperance Union, The afternoon was beautifully fine, and the attendance was good. The president (Miss A. Gray) presided, and in welcoming the guests explained the object of the gathering. She then introduced the speaker for the afternoon (the Rev. George Miller), who spoke in encouraging terms of the work done by the union. A pleasing feature of the afternoon was the presentation of a “ long service badge ” to Mrs Hislop, who, Miss Gray said, was the pioneer member of the North-East Valley union. Mrs Peart (vice-president) also spoke of the long and faithful work that Mrs Hislop had done for the union. Mrs Hislop suitably replied, stating that over 30 years ago, in her own home, she and two or three other ladies held the first meeting of the North-East Valley Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Reference was made to the departure from the district of the Rev. George and Mrs Miller (also a vice-president of the union), and regret was expressed that this was probably the last address the union would hear from him before his departure. After afternoon tea had been served on the la wns a very hearty vote of thanks was tendered to the Misses Begg for their kindness in giving the use of their grounds for the afternoon. All articles on the stalls were disposed of and a satisfactory sum was realised. Two new members were initiated.
