DASH WITH RED FLAG

A level-crossing keep at Melton Mowbray last month probably saved the livt.a of some of the leading members of Engr lish society. The Cottesmore Hunt was stretched* out for about a mile, and was galloping toward a level crossing just outside Melton, when . a London express train was approaching. The train was some distance away, but a bend in the line hid' the hunt from the driver, and he did not slacken speed. . Once, round that bend it would have been impossible for him to pull up in time to avoil an accident. The level-crossing keeper signalled the hunt to continue crossing as quickly ae possible, and snatching up a red' flag ran up the line toward the express. Hie prompt action enabled the train to pu£ up half a mile from the level crossing! when only a few of the horsemen hal passed through.
