TUG-OF-WAR CONTESTS
A VARIED PROGRAMME i _____ ' Keen interest was evinced in the tug-of-war contest, organised in aid of the Tramway Band Equipment Fund, which was commenced in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last evening. Besides the contests for 50 stone, 55 stone, and 60 stone teams pulls were arranged for boys and girls. This is the first occasion on which girls,.have appeared in a tug-of-war contest m the city, and thev were accorded a full measure of applause. The contest is being conducted on the two-life system, and will be continued this evening and to-morrow night. • A programme of music was supplied by the Port Chalmers Marine'Band, under Bandmaster G. M'Dowell. This evening the Green Island Municipal Band will be in attendance. The results are as follows: — BOYS. First Round. Brockville defeated Half Way Bush. St. Leonards a bye. Second Round. Brockville defeated St. Leonards. GIRLS/ First Round. ' True Blue defeated Maia. Bonzer Girls (Mosgiel) defeated Blue Birds. 50-STONE TEAMS. First Round. Wharf Hotel defeated .Maia. Half Way Bush defeated West Harbour Band. 55-STONE TEAMS. First Round. Brockville defeated Fitzroy B. Woodhaugh defeated Fitzroy A. Wharf Hotel defeated Harmony Boys by default. 60-STONE TEAMS. First Round. Brockville defeated Fitzroy. Woodhaugh defeated Formap and Nicol. BANDSMEN. First Round. Tramway defeated West Harbour. DOUBLE PULLS. 18 Stone. First Round. Topping and Vernon defeated Watkins and Wilson. Griffin and Wilson, a bye. 20 STONE. First Round. Davis and Coutts defeated Blackwood and Macdonnell. Sonntag and Welham, a bye.
