l FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY St.’ Clair Club.—Mixed Foursomes.: , liiterclub match, .Sjfc. Clair y. Otago,, at St. Clair. ■

The weather conditions were ideal on Saturday, when the St. Clair Club held its monthly Medal Competition. Some of the greens .had been recently top-dressed, and were inclined to be ’ s)ow in consequence, but they were nevertheless very true, and, there was nothing to prevent accurate putting. ‘ There were a number of very good cards returned, - especially in the senior competition.,- J. E. Matheson was one of the first players in, Iris card being 69—2—67. • This card survived several challenges until ,A. B. Watt equalled with 79—12—07. P. Duthie was one of the last to come in with a splendid return of 64 net off a 10 handicap, but even this was not good enough to win, as A. Jeavons. a very late starter, had a fine round of 75, which his handicap of 12 reduced to 63 net. This was the best card in, and deservedly , won the senior event, and incidentally earned Jor Jeavons a substantial handicap reduction. Other good cards were returned by D. C. Bennie (60-1-65). B. C. O’Dnscoll (73 — p —eg), D. S. MTcan (74—0—68), and S. - Goldsmid (80—12—08)., Benme and Matheson shared .the honurs for the best gross score. .. • .-if In the juniors the scoring was also very close, and the result was a tie between W. -B...Kincaid (82-16-66) and;L..T. M’Cormack (84—18—66). J. Taylor and E. H. McArthur each had net 67 s, and C. J. Wood was 68. * . , The Stroke Handicap for the series of three rounds was completed. D. C. Bennie being declared the winner with a fine aggregate of; 211. Bennie’s nearest challenger, was H. Cunningham. with :217. . ' MIXED FOURSOMES ON SATURDAY . The Mixed Foursomes competition which is to be played at Corstorphirie on Satur. day; will be a suitable match for the end of the year. . v..- ■ • The proceeds from the entry fees tor this competition will- go to the fund lor Misses Kay and Gaisford, It is expected that there will be a big field for this evbnt. ; INTERCLUB MATCH'. . The return match: between St, Clair and Balmacewen will be played at St. Clair this .week-end, . Otago/ inflicted, an overwhelming defeat .upon ■ St. Clair at Balmacewen a fortnight ago, and Tit. Cinir members ate anxious toabtairi/their revenge on 'their own ,course. -Otago has, of course, much the stronger team, judged on the basis of handicap ratings, but more than in any othfer game there is/in golf a great advantage to be, derived trprn playing on one’s home course. Otago had this advantage in the last match; but this time St; Clair will ha\P it. Special interest will centre in the matches in which K.. Ross,- Otago - Club champion, and B. /F,‘/Wright;-. New Zealand, champion,, are playing.. '.These two .men , will - probably .have a- ’following ,qf spectators ‘who .will be/well repaid by seeing golf at its best.

OTAGO CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Ross and .Wight had a great match in the semi-finals, and Ross secured his win dply‘by the.'narrowest of margins after a grim fight. 'Actually Wight‘was one up going to. the seventeenth, but on the seventeenth Wight took three putts,- He then/threw ; awqy his changes by putting his. second into, the bunker guarding the green at the ■home hole, and Ross, who llad played the -hole; perfectly, won the match one up,V 1 •/•.’• k, / . • ; Ferguson ’was;right on his .game; against Sime, who-did’.not produce' His usual sound golf. The game .was consequdntly rather one-sided, ‘Ferguson winning comfortably by 6 and 5, . . , . ’ The - final was the best club championship final ’ seen for many /years.- ; Boss/ established a very sound lead of four up in the morning,’ and it was a natural thing that niany then regarded the result in', his favour ‘V~,foregone , conclusion. Ferguson, ’ However, was by/ no means beaten, and.-He staged a .remarkable re-; co'yefy .against His .experienced opponent.; He gradually recovered ’ the lost ground and then took the lead, so that the game was-decidedly in his/favour when He was two up--with only four holes’ to play. When Ross won the. next two holes the excitement became intense. There was no change at the seventeenth, which was halved '.in four. ‘With both seconds on the green, it looked as if an extra* hole Would be -required, hut Ferguson made the. fatak, bjunder, of being short with his approach putt and missing his second putt of six feet. , , : , .... „ . //It/was/ a./gteat ;;match, and-, one well. up/ to* club champibniship ptandara.’ . Ross; for many ‘-years had practically .-.a monopoly of this event, but latterly the standard has . improved and he has not been -unchallenged, It should'he , a source of satisfaction for anyone to win-, a championship from such a strong team - r as that which... the Otago club pan field at .the present time.
