THE ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA AIR RACE
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of Tuesday I saw that it has been suggested in Auckland that New Zealand should enter an aeroplane for the coming England to Australia air race. I think this proposal should be taken up seriously by the people of New Zealand as a whole. Considering the large number of British, American, and Australian aeroplanes which will most likely enter for the race, it would be a pity if New Zealand will not be represented. I am sure the sum needed for the purchase of a suitable aeroplane and other expenses could be raised when it is realised that, as was pointed out in Auckland, if only everyone contributes a, penny, it would be sufficient; while the added interest in the race to all New Zealanders would make it well worth while. The aero clubs might help in this, way. We frequently hear that we are not air-minded' enough. This would create considerable interest in that direction. The idea of a prize being offered for a race, or for the best flight from Melbourne to New Zealand, is also well worth considering, for, after the big race, many of the pilots, especially those , who had not won anything, would be glad to participate. The added publicity which New Zealand would receive in the eyes of the world would amply return us the value of any prize given.—I am, etc., Would-be Contributor. Abbotsford, December 13.
