PROFESSIONAL SPORT

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Your correspondent “ Amateur” writing from Cromwell, apparently is a died-in-the-wool advocate of amateurism. Well and good, but let him ask himself what constitutes an amateur. _ Does he infer that a lad, because he gains a prize of £2 or £3 at a country sports, must be classed as a professional? The thing is too absurd to have to be refuted. To show the absurdity of defining amateurism, compare the lad who is handed a small money prize and the crack English lawn tennis players who were here recently. The former is called a professional and the latter are classed as amateurs. Many more instances can be given if required. In my opinion there are no professional runners or cyclists in New Zealand. Our so-called professionals should be classed as cash amateurs. What I would like to see is a sports meeting where lads could compete for cash or trophies as they wished. This system works well in Canterbury, but the narrow-minded attitude adopted by the Otago Amateur Association precludes this desirable course. Details regarding this latter-statement can be given to “Ajpateur ” if he requires them. —I am, etc., Cash Amateur. Oamaru, November 3.
