QUEENSTOWN-KINGSTON ROAD
EARLY COMPLETION URGED ISOLATED POSITION OF SETTLERS. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. November 2. The endeavours that are being made in Otago and Southland to have the highway between Queenstown and Kingston completed were supported here by southern members to-day when Messrs J, A. Hargest, P. A. de la Perrelle, VV. A. Bodkin, and A. E. Ansell discussed tile need for the road with the chairman of the Railways Board (Mr H. H. Sterling). They stressed the isolated position of the settlers in the Southern Lakes district and the general desire throughout Otago and Southland for the completion of the road. They also referred to the tact that new vessels will be reqquired on Lake Wakatipu in future if the road is not opened up for traffic. The meeting was not open to the press, but Mr de la Perrelle stated later that Mr Sterling had said that the Railways Board had to consider the effect the road would have on the boat service on the lake. He could not give a definite reply, but he promised that he would’ bring the matter before the next meeting of the board, which would inform members regarding the attitude that it intends to adopt. Mr de la Perrelle said that ho understood the board would meet within a few days, and added that as soon ns a reply was received from the board the southern members would wait on the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) and the Minister of Public Works (Mr J. Bitchener).
