Mr Frank Wall, a United States reporter on a Long Island City newspaper, recently wrote to Professor Einstein that it seemed to him that, with the earth revolving as it did, “ part of the time a person is standing right side up; part of the time, on the lower side, he is standing upside down, upheld by gravitation ; and part of the time he is sticking out on the earth at right angles, and part of the time at left angles.” “Would it be reasonable to assume,” he asked, “ that it is while a person is standing on his head —or rather upside down—he falls in love and does other foolish things?” The question had the following reply from Coq-sur-Mer, Belgium:—“Very honoured sir, —Falling in love is by no means the most foolish thing mankind does—but gravitation cannot be held responsible for that.— With highest regards, Albert Einstein.”
