SALVATION ARMY
A street appeal will be held in the city to-day by the Salvation Army. The work of the Army commends itself to everyone, and doubtless, wherever possible, its m'any well-wishers will assist as far as means allow. Ever since that eventful day 50 years ago, when on April 1, 1883, Captain Pollard conducted the first Salvation Army meeting in New Zealand, *the public has, of its- own free will, supported the work, which for 50 years has appealed to all as being worthy. To-day the same Salvation Army is interwoven in the social and religious life of the. city, and is well described by the words, “The: Army of the helping hand.” Every member of the Army is told not only to help those in distress, but ,to show how to do it, so that their very nature finds pleasure in defending the weak, and trying to head off the unruly and bring them both to a different outlook of life, the one to have more hope and energy, and the other to practice restraint and thoughtfulness.
