(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, November 2 CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
There was a gooc( attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Port Molyneux Caledonian Society. Mr Peter Laughton (president) occupied the chair, and commented briefly on the satisfactory financial position of the 'society, which had a credit balance of £206. The amount expended in prize money and medals (£157 7s) was the largest in the history of the society. A fair amount had been spent on improvements, the society having made a grant to the Domain Board to improve the 100yds track, and to have the hill levelled, in order to give more room for car parking. Unfortunately the membership showed a decrease. —The report and balance sheet were adopted. Office-bearers were elected as follows: President, Mr J. N. Bates; vice-presidents —Messrs W. G. Sinclair and W. H. Mennell; secretary, Mr A. M. Wylie; assistant secretax - y> Mr A. Eric Paterson; treasurer. Mr J. Wright; auditor, Mr J. B. Campbell. It wag decided to carry out practically the same programme as last year, with a prize list totalling £157. It was agreed to delete the pole vault from the programme and to substitute a long jump. KAITANGATA MINE. Considerable speculation is being indulged in concerning the probable reduction in the staff of the Kaitangata coal mine this week. A cabal is to be held which will result in a smaller number of men being employed, but the extent of the reduction contemplated is not yet known. Owing ,to the trouble in the Southland mines last summer, Kaitangata was able to employ a full staff right through the warmer months, hut this year those conditions do not exist.
