AIR MAIL SERVICE
NEW ZEALAND’S CONTRIBUTION STATEMENT BY POSTMASTERGENERAL. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 1. The fact that the air mail service between Sydney and Londori to which the New Zealand Government agreed to contribute £SOOO may take only 16 days instead of 18 days as previously announced was mentioned by the Postmaster-general (Mr A.. Hamilton) in an interview this evening. He also said that the published statements that correspondence forwarded to England by Matson steamers and flown across America might reach London in 21 days if quick connection with an Atlantic steamer were made were correct. The air route across America was little used, however, for New Zealand correspondence, and those who desired to make use of the Matson boat appeared to forget that it was very heavily -subsidised by the American Government to compete with British vessels. Mr Hamilton said that assuming the connections would be good, a three-day trip across the Tasman could be expected, and thus a 19-day mail service from London would be constituted. “ Any suggestion that we should represent the need for a faster air service between England and Australia might readily bring the rejoinder that usually the person wno pays least makes the most noise. Apparently the relative smallness of our contribution toward the services is not realised.”
