TAWA FLAT DEVIATION
END OF WORK IN SIGHT ; Pick livmai Press association i WELLINGTON, November 1. The end of the Tawa Flat tunnel is now in sight. Except for the levelling of the floor and cleaning up, it is ready for the laying of the rails, and will be ready next week. The to.a] length of the two tunnels is 18,170 feet. The amount of rock excavated was 460,000 cubic yards, gelignite used, 350,0001 b; timber, over 5 000,000 super, feet; cement, 26,000 tons. Of the rock taken out 120,000 cubic yards were crushed and used for concrete aggregate as well as 35,000 cubic yards of sand. On completion of the deviation Mr F. Langbein, who is in charge, will be transferred to Masterton to supervise highways as the representative of the Wellington district engineer of the Public Works Department.
