FLORA AND FAUNA

PROTECTION IN AFRICA DISCUSSION AT CONFERENCE. LONDON, October 31. Fourteen countries were represented at the international conference to consider means of preserving and protecting the flora and fauna of Africa. Lord Plymouth (Under-secretary for the Colonies) emphasised the need for new methods of controlling the indiscriminate destruction of wild life. Lord Onslow detailed some articles in a draft convention prepared by the British Government with special reference to the constitution of national parks and reserves. The English-speaking representative of Ethiopia, a picturesque figure, said his country intended to deal with motor car hunters who dashed about shooting herds and scattering them. It would be more difficult to legislate regarding the modern peril of aircraft, the noise of which scared wild beasts, causing much damage. Professional big game hunters, poachers, and amateur sportsmen threatened the gradual extinction of Africa’s wild game, said Mr C. T. te Water (South African High Commissioner).
