NORTH-EAST HARBOUR CLUB The dance held 1 by the North-East Harbour Club last Saturday was a decided success. Things went with a swing from start to finish, and 'all present thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The card evenings every Tuesday are also proving very popular. s During the week-end the launches Tui and Waitiri . visited Macandrew Bay.: f It was pleasing to see, Tucana out with her new sails last week-end. H Minnow has been launched, and Texaco is ready for the, water. The Ivy is being prepared for Her summer sojourn at the Heads. ■. -

The speed-boat Tui II is still in the water. Her owner (M> Macdonald) is frequently absent, but when time permits he intends to give her a complete overhaul, and to fit a new and more powerful engine. ' ■ , ’

A visitor to Macandrew Bay last Sunday was the yacht Adelaide. With her white topsails and new sails and mast, one found it hard to believe that this was the same boat so well and favourably known for many years past to yachtsmen on Otago Harbour. Her appearance fleeted credit bn those responsible for her renovation, and as she drifted to an anchorage in the bay riiariy were the ad? miring comments made upon her smart appearance. It is interesting to recall how fashions tyave changed in boats, even, in-the comparatively short history of, the club. First came the small boats of the 10 and 12ft 6in class. Yachtsmen will recall the successful Spray, the small fleet of Takapuna boats, M. Smith s. Vision, and others. None of these boats mow appear on the club’s register. Then: came the ■ 14-footers., and it will be remembered mow, the Macandrew Bay. boys,' with inferior boats and gear raced race after race with ■ the “cracks,”* just, for the fun of it. Of these, the sole survivor is the Agnes, and she is fetill to be reckoned with when . the conditions;.favour, her, as the handieappers know. . At, the , present time the fashion is apparently for big yachts, as witness the .Roma.-Result, Minnow, and Vera. , ■ ~: . i • i . . ■ ;' ■ BROAD BAY CLUB The weather during the week-end was good, and •, much painting, and refitting work was carried out at, the various sheds and slipways. :•% ; The Hermione was launched on Sunday, and took a party for a very ..enjoyable spin to the Spit. • ■'‘ ' • * - . The Mareiva is on the slip fqr; painting and refitting before opening day. Bonny Mary was again seen under way' during the week-end; • The Dawn was out for a sail on Sunday, and was moving very well in the' light breeze. ' ■ The Miti is also on, the slip, arid work will no doubt be started on her immediately. . . ■ ;.. •; ' _ Th® Harlequin was towed back from Pork Chalmers after having a new deck fitted,, and should be much more comfortable .to sail-in this season. The Tucana visited the . Bay, and looks i very well with her new suit of sails. VAUXHALL CLUB The combined opening of the yacht and motor boat clubs on: the harbour is . to be held at Vauxhali on November 18,-/, and ,the Vauxhali Power Boat and Sailing - Clpb has been entrusted with the arrange- ■, ments, which the committee now has well , in hand. , \ \ t During the week-epd the harbour.in the ; vicinity of Vauxhali looked very busy. - Tempted by the pleasant weather several yachts, among which were the 14-footers Squib, Heather. Winifred. Eileen, Starlight, and Pupnke,, were gettipg in some early practice for .the coming season. ” POT-HUNTING " Considerable time was given at the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association’s meeting last" week v (says “Speed- ’ well,” in the Auckland Star) to the ques- , tion of changing the system of carrying -t out the combined opening and closing of the season. The objections to the present system are on the score of dual prizes in each class, which has been termed “pothunting. 1 This is made possible because, * although alp the V class, for instance, sail, in one race by joining and paying dues ' in several clubs, they have the right to compete for the prizes offered bv each club. If they are fortunate in sailing an extra good race they can win two or three - first or other prizes at one time, , ;• As an alternative it was suggested that each club cater for a certain class. The Z boats, for instance, would naturally be ’A handled by the Takapuna Club, arid so on. • The objectors to this scheme .-point out that other clubs also catered for the Z boats; also, that the club taking charge, of the H class, for instance, would suffer in entry fees compared with the club ; handling the Vor A classes. In one case the' entries usually average' about five, - and in the other classes they may total';; 20 or 25 each. The whole idea seemedunpractical and was given no support. V f ;; THe meeting was not so unanimous on t the question of, dual prizes; the “pothunters ” and “ anti-pot-hunters,” as one delegate put it. wercfairly evenly divided. , but. as no resolution was carried enforcing v a change, the present system stands for opening day at least, and possibly for the season. , _ , * ■ ‘ ' NOTES" At the annual meeting of the Auckland -• Yacht and Motor Boat Association, held last week, the president (Mr C. H. Palmer) wag re-elected to that office. . Messrs W. Johnston and M; Blair have almost finished their nhw auxiliary yacht Southern Light (says the Southland Times). She is 37ft' 6in loverall, and will be powered with a 15-16 horsepower sleeve-valve Kelvin engines She is :-to *, be ketch rigged with a -sail area of approximately 500 square feet. Below, accommodation is provided for six persons, and everything has been done to-make her as comfortable as possible. In a recent race held by the Howick Sailing Club in Auckland one of the yachts, Cariad, a 14-footer, was sailed by a crew of girls, who did very well to take second place. They were congratulated on their performance at the conclusion of the race, and also on the siriart way the skipper had lashed up the head of the boat’s-judder, which carried away a few minutes before the start of the race/ '
