UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

LOCAL ACTIVITIES CENTRAL MISSION CHRISTMAS CHEER. An appeal is now being made by the staff of the Social Service Department of the Central Mission towards the Christmas parcel fund and the children’s camps. A community sing will bo held in the Octagon Hall on Friday from 12.30 to 1.30. The conductor will be Mr W. R. Sinclair and the pianist Miss Rita Holmes. Miss Gwenda Burt will sing a solo, and an item will be given by the National Reel Party. Each Christmas parcel distributed will cost about 10s, and will consist of tea, sugar, flour, jellies, oatmeal, potatoes, butter, joint of meat, Christmas parcel, etc. The B stations are assisting in this appeal and subscriptions may be sent direct to any of the B stations or to the Central Mission office. GOODS FROM RELIEF DEPOT ALLEGATION AGAINST COUNCIL EMPLOYEES. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 31. Cases where men in regular work drawing wages up to £5 a week are receiving assistance from relief depots aie being inquired into. The question was raised at a meeting of the Citizens’ Unemployment Relief Committee, and in view of the fact that inquiries are in hand it was not carried further. Mr W. W. Sea iff said that five City Council employees had received goods from a depot. Mr R. T. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Bureau, said in that case it was obvious that production of form U 825 was not insisted on. Mr J. W. Beanland, chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council, stated that the committee knew of one ease of a man who had been reprimanded. The City Council would welcome a ieport of any cases where it was known definitely that their employees were taking advantage of the scheme. Hearsay was of no assistance to the council. “ I think it is a scandaHf anything like this is going on,” he said. The chairman stated that he_ thought the committee could leave the discussion there in the meantime.
