NAVAL VISITOR
CRUISER DIOMEDE IN PORT H.M.S. Diomede, which is making an extended visit to southern ports, arrived at Dunedin at 9.45 a.m. yesterday from Akaroa, and was berthed at the Rattray street wharf. ' Since the cruiser was associated with the Australian warships Canberra and Australia and the flagship Dunedin in manoeuvres in Cook Strait on September 27, she has visited Nelson, Queen Charlotte Sound, Lyttelton, and Akaroa. She will remain at Dunedin until Saturday evening, when she will sail for Auckland direct. It was orginally arranged for the cruiser to visit Timaru, Wellington, and Gisborne after leaving Dunedin on November 7, but the itinerary was changed on Monday night, as the commanding officer and the commander are required at Auckland next week to attend a court martial.
Captain Cosmo Mv-Graham, who succeeded Captain V. A. C. Crutchley, V.C., in command of the Diomede on_ August 3, is on life first visit to the Dominion.' He commanded various destroyers for the greater part of the war. After going through a training school he took a course in flying, and was later transferred to an aircraft-carrier. He was, for a time, flight captain with a cruiser squadron in the Mediterranean, and wag promoted to captain in June, 1930. Official calls were made yesterday morning, when Captain Graham received Messrs H. C. Campbell (chairman) and J. Renton (secretary) of the HarbourBoard, and the harbour master (Captain J. Mac Lean). Later the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) and the Civic Committee called on the commander. Captain Graham will return the calls at 11 a.m. to-day; The following is the personnel of the Diomede:—Captain C. The ship’s company has arranged to give a variety concert in Hi§ Majesty’s Theatre to-night. The proceeds will be handed to tire Mayor for the Christmas treat and seaside excursion for the children of the unemployed. The men of the navy can always be relied upon to give a good entertainment. Since the Diomede last visited Dunedin 100 new ratings have joined the vessel. The usual shore leave is being granted to the crew, and entertainments are being arranged for officers and men.
