NEW SOUND UNIT
GRAND THEATRE IMPROVEMENTS There were no morning or afternoon sessions yesterday at the Grand Theatre, the reason being that the installation of the very latest “double-throated” type of acoustic unit behind the screen was in progress. The new apparatus was specially made to the order of the Grand Theatre by the Western Electric Company, and it took over three months to complete bn account of the technical exactitude required. It is the only unit of its kind in Dunedin, and incidentally one of very few in the Dominion, and it is remarkable in that it has the capacity to take in a wider range of sound vibrations than the type previously installed, thus imparting to the acoustics a mellowness and richness of tone which was not possible with the previous equipment. Although the new mechanism was much more expensive than the previous one, the great improvement in the sound which drew favourable comment from last night’s audience has made the management feel that the extra cost was well justified. The installation of the new unit has now made possible the shifting of the screen several feet backwards so that the picture can now be easily seen in proper perspective from all parts of the house. Two new lenses of an improved projection type were also installed, adding to the clarity of the pictures upon the screen, and collectively the new improvements will greatly add to the enjoyment of the pictures by the patrons of the Grand Theatre.
