ELLERSLIE AND TAKANINI. (Per United Press Association.! AUCKLAND, October 31. The weather was fine and thc_ going first class for training at Ellerslie this morning, and there was more galloping than usual. The course proper, with the poles 35ft out from the rails, was available, and the bulk of the fast work was 1 done on this. Whenuakura was first out, being sent over half a mile. He covered the first furlong in 11 4-ssec and completed his task in SOsec, running on solidly at the finish. The Mitehelson Cup candidates Rod Sun, Carfex, and Lord Val were associated over a round, running the distance in 2min 4 3-ssec. They covered the last seven furlongs in Imin 33 4-ssec and the final half-mile in 54sec. The first-named pair were together at the finish, with Lord Val about five lengths away. Red Sun, who had the outside running and was wide out going out of the straight, was staying on at the end, though he was being kept lip to his work. Carfex also worked better than usual, his effort being most satsifactory. Karangapa finished in front of Prince Colossus at the end of five furlongs run in Imin 4 2-ssec, the first two taking 25sec. My Money and Royal Appellant ran half a mile, the former finishing in front, in 52sec. One of the best efforts of the morning was registered by King Musk, who had Alpinus as companion over seven furlongs. He ran the first three in 37 l-ssee, the four in SOsec, and the full distance in Imin 32 3-ssec. King Must was in front at the finish, and was going much better than his companion. After running his first furlong in 12sec, Kiltowyn registered 50 2-saec for the half-mile, and could have done better. Baroscope, who looks much improved as the result of recent racing, strode over seven furlongs in Imin 44 4-ssec. He is to run in the Mitehelson Cup, and will be ridden by E. Manson. Chief Cook, United, and Echo Song went away from the five-furlong post, and after running their first furlong in 12sec, home in Imin 3 2-sscc. This was a good effort, and Chief Cook, who was being kicked up at the finish, was a shade in front. Grant’s Opal gave a safe display over the steeplechase fences on the flat. Zane

Grey, Ivairuri, and Bamba started of! over a round of the steeplechase fences. Commencing at the sod wall, they negotiated the fences on the flat, Bamba then dropping out, the other pair continuing on over the hill and finishing up by again jumping the fences on the flat. They both went well, though Kairuri was inclined to be a bit careful. Arrivals this morning included View Halloo, Porotiti, Mother Superior, Spiral, Pomp, Count Lendroff, All Humbug, ami Coachman, Master Brierly, who hag been racing in Sydney during the last few months, returned in charge of R. S. Bagby yesterday, and he was out exercising this morning. The fast work at Takimni tins morning was carried out on the inside grass track, where the going was excellent. Gallant Knight was first oat, and completed htflf a mile in 51 S-oscc. Greek Gold was a neck in front of Exaggeration at the end of six furlongs, run in Imin 16 l-ssec, the first three taking 37sec. Tatyoon was three lengths clear of Arch Ruler, with Thespis half a length further back over five furlongs, done in Imm 3 3-ssec. Nun Nicer beat Nicodemus over four furlongs in 51 3-ssoc, and Cherry King completed his work by running the last three in 38 4-ssec. Gold Pocket beat Expectancy by half ,a length over six furlongs, the last five taking Imin 4 4-ssec. Speedmint and King March were sent over a mile, with Tavern Knight to assist them over the last seven furlongs. The full distance took Imin 45 l-ssec, the last half-mile being run in 53 l-ssec. Knight, who was just in front of Speedmint. with King March a neck away, ran the last seven in Imin Slsec. The best effort of the morning was registered by Gay Sheila, who beat Gay Marigold by a neck at the end of five furlongs in Imin 2 l-ssec. Gay Sheila worked attractively, and could have bettered her time. . W. H. Jarvis arrived at Takanini from Sydney yesterday with Ammon Ra, and ig quartered at J. L. Gray’s stable. Solomon has been scratched lor the Great Northern Guineas, Superior and Day Wind for the Welcome Stakes, and Refresher for the Shorts Handicap, to be run at Ellerslie next Saturday.
