BANKS PENINSULA MEETING
NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, October 28. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club held its meeting at Motukarara in ideal weather before a large attendance. Good fields provided interesting sport, with a number of New Zealand Cup candidates as a special attraction. In the O’Kain’s Trial Stakes Silver Jest, Silk Arrow, Proscenium i and Rebel Star were smartest out, several of the novices failing to began at all well. Proscenium soon drew clear. Silver Jest ran into trouble after going two furlongs, Rebel Star, Silk Arrow, Red Dance, Top Rank, Silver Jest, and Variant going on after the leader in that order. Reb6l Star took charge at the distance and stalled off a late challenge from Silver Jest by a length. Vintage, who came with a rattle in the straight, was a length away, just in front of Procenium, with Variant close up. Then, after a gap, came Silk Arrow, Top Rank, and Wild Sky. The winner showed wonderful improvement on his form at Rangiora last Monday. He is a speedy customer and bred to be good, as he is a four-year-old by Robespierre from Sweet Beauty, a half-sister, by Greyspear, to Polydora. Rebel Star was acquired recently by the trotting trainer and driver, J. S. Shaw, who had not previously been associated with a galloper. Silver Jest was very unlucky. Vintage was having his first race, and is one to keep in mind. Backers received a shock in the Kaituna 1 High-weight Handicap, as the favourite, Drumfire, whipped round at the start and took no part in the race. Silver Brier led out from Verdun and Elude, but after going half a mile Nightguard took third nlace, with High Tor fourth. High Tor moved up at the entrance to the straight and won by a length and a-half from Fleeting Glance, who came with a late run to beat Silver Brier by a length. The tiring Verdun was next, then Elude, with Nightguard last. High Tor dis-, appointed at Rangiora, but she hit out well in the closing stages of her latest race. It was her first win since last November. Fleeting Glance has not been a lucky purchase for her present owner, as she seems unable to do better than earn place money. Yankee Land was first out in the Duvauchelles Trot, with Dandy Locanda, Bide a’ Wee and Real Burton handy when the field settled down. The order was unchanged to the home turn. 'Real Burton then moved up, but though he took second place in the straight, Yankee Land beat him comfortably by two lengths. Dandy Locanda was three lengths away, followed by Bide a’ Wee, Great Seaman, Camera, Genera] Sarsfield, and Happi. The winner has been prominent in several races lately, and is likely to improve. The race was confined to four horses all the way. The Akaroa Handicap provided a fine finish. Sweet Agnes led out of the straight from Silvox', Ranelagh, Water Polo, and Minerval, with Ramo last. The order was unchanged going to the back, the pace being slow. Jaloux then made a forward move and ,at the far turn he joined Sweet Agnes in the lead, with Silvox and Ranelagh next, Minerva] having gone back to last. Sweet Agnes had a slight advantage from Silvox and Jaloux at the entrance to the straight, Ranelagh handy, while Kamo was I moving up fast. Ramo kept up his run and won by a length from Jaloux, who beat Silvox by a neck, with Sweet Agnes another neck away. .Then came Water Polo and Minerval, with Ranelagh last, fading out badly in the run home. The slow pace in the early stages was all in . Ramo’s favour.- He has a great record on the Motukarara course, as he has won the Peninsula Cup twice at autumn meetings. Jaloux stuck on better than usual, I probably due to the slow pace. Minerval raced very badly. Silvox stuck on well, after being pulled about in the early part of the journey. The Halswell Hack Handicap provided a sensation in the shape of the record dividend of the season on the win machine. Falkland, Haore Tonu. and; Errantry were the early leaders, but Tnirau soon joined them. Errantry, on the outside, forged ahead at the far turn, while Haere Tonu dropped back suddenly. Errantry led to the straight from Falkland and Tnirau, with Sibella and Royal A.mphora next. Errantry retired a little further on, leaving Falkland in charge.
Then Sibella challenged and went on to win decisively by a length, while Bon Tray came with a late rush to beat Falkland by a neck. After them there was a gap io Royal Amphora, who just beat Tuirau and Haere Tonu. The winner, a four-year-old by Silverado from Zaragoza, is trained by F. D. Jones for her breeder, Mr H. A. Knight, and she was having her first race. Royal Amphora did not show his usual dash from the barrier. There was an inquiry into the incident in which Haere Tonu lost his place. It was found to be due to Errantry boring in and it was decided to take no action. There were only two 10s tickets on Sibella to win. . The Quorn was the first out m the Le Bons Handicap, but at the end of a furlong Cranford headed him, with i Manetho, White Doe, and Monastic next. ! Cranford was two lengths clear at the 1 home turn, where The Quorn started to drift back. Manetho followed the leader tp the straight and went away to_ win easily by four lengths. White Doe, finishing strongly, was third, with Wise Choice, who came with a late run, fourth, then Monastic and Heather Glow. The performance of Manetho was impressive and he is likely to earn a lot more money before long. Cranford was tiring, while White Doe finished so well that she may be a winner soon. The Quorn faded back and was last at the po'st. Argentic is not. ready. Agile led out in the Little River Trot from Encounter and Royal Audo. But passing the stand Agile had Royal Audo, Paul Drusus, War Path, and Harvestin as his nearest attendants. Agile broke going out of the straight, Royal Audo and War Path leading Harvestin and Paul Drusus to the back. There was no change at the home turn, where Grand Author was moving up. War Path drew out in the straight and won by two lengths from Grand Author, who broke near the post. Agile, finishing fast, was three lengths away, with Harvestin, Paul Drusus, Wise Guy, and Royal Audo next. The winner is one of the successful Man o’ War breed. Grand Author was going well when he broke near tile finish; The concluding event, the Brackenfield Hack Handicap, provided an interesting race, though Gaysome always looked; a winner. She took charge early from Top Rank and Lady Zephyr, with Niggerhead, Final Shot, and Cleaner leading the others. Gaysome led Top Rank and Niggerhead to the straight, with the others handy. Niggerhead was in second place at the distance but Gaysome won decisively by half a length, while-Final Shot, 'with a late rush, beat Niggerhead by a neck. Sam Smith and Lady Zephyr were next, with. a gap to Importance and Gleaner, who headed the others. Gay-, some negotiated the turn quite well and won impressively. She looks, like training on to good form. Final Shot ran on in a style which promises well for the future. She was sold a week ago by Sir Charles Clifford and now carries the same colours as Thurina. winner of the Grand National Steeplechase.
