THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The monthly meeting of the Roxburgh Institute was held on October 11. A special gift market table was held to raise money for the federation. The motto for the month was “ When we’re up to. our eyes in hot water try to be like the kettle and sing,” There was a musical programme. Songs by Airs Burgess and Alies Raper, duet by Miss Watson and Aliss AI. Wood, and a pianoforte solo by Aliss Winslow. The hostesses for the afternoon were the committee members. There was a large attendance of members and some guests.

At the October meeting of the Heriot Institute Mrs A. Sinclair (president) presided over a large attendance of members. Interesting letters were read from the institute’s link, Heriot, Scotland. After the business the spinster members took charge of the meeting and a happy social evening was held. The motto was “Keep your face always towards the sunshine,” and the roll call, which caused great amusement, was “Nursery Rhymes.” Community singing followed and then a play entitled “Oh, Mr Smythe! ” the principal characters being Miss G. Sim (Mrs Smythe), Miss L. Moncur (Mr Smythe), and Miss K. Riddell (Miss Blake-Wilson). Songs were rendered by Miss G. Sim and E. Ottrey, and a pianoforte duet by Misses M. Paterson and U. Sinclair. The competition, “ Biting an Animal out of a Wine Biscuit,” caused much amusement, Mrs Calverley being first with a camel, Mrs King second with a rooster, and Miss I. Paterson third with a sheep. A surprise supper supplied by the spinsters was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The evening was voted one of the most successful yet held and the spinsters were accorded a very hearty vote of thanks.

The Taieri Women’s Institute held a successful meeting on October 19. The programme was a varied one. Miss Passmore (arts and crafts teacher, Dunedin) neatly demonstrated raffia weaving, members following this with great interest. Mesdames Murray and Gillan, the members who' attended the leaders’ school, passed on to members what they had learned there. They urged members to make more frequent use of bran in the makin<r and serving of porridge, bread, and biscuits. Mrs Kirkland spoke on the proposed visit of Mrs Kelso, the secretary of the Dominion Federation. All members were urged to attend her meeting in First Church Hall, Dunedin, on November 14 at 10.30 a.m. Three new members joined, bringing the total up to 105. The century member being Mrs D. Mitchell, she was presented with an institute spoon. An amusing quarter of an hour was spent in a competition, drawing a tail on a donkey on a blackboard, the competitors being blindfolded. Mrs J. Mitchell was the winner. The president thanked Miss Passmore and Mesdames Murray and Gillan at the close of a very successful afternoon.

The monthly meeting of the Kaitangata Women’s Institute was held in the Anglican Hall on October 16. The president, Mrs Carson, presided over a good attendance of members. The roll-call, “ First Aid Hints,” was answered with many useful home remedies. Sister Templeton then gave a most practical talk on “ First Aid,” which should prove useful to members in a case of emergency, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A demonstration on “ A Knitted Cushion of New Design ” was given by Miss Carter, members taking a keen interest in the work displayed. In the competition of organdie petal work, Mrs Finch gained first, Miss Gibson second, and Mrs Watson third place. In the written competition, Mrs M'Auley was first and Mrs Carson, Sister Templeton, and Miss Lawrence were equal for second place. The hostesses for the day were Mcsdames Gibson, Neil, Siram, and Coulter. Last Thursday evening the _ institute held an enjoyable evening in the Anglican Hall, there being a large attendance of members and their friends. The time passed quickly in community singing, games, competitions, and dancing. Those successful in the various competitions vere Misses M. and N. M'Ghee and H. Morrison. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mr B. Vickers and partner. After supper Mrs CarSfm presented the prizes for the competitions held throughout the year. Mrs M'Auley secured first and Mrs JAllen second. During the evening solos were rendered by Miss Aitchison and Mr Beck. Mr Gibson capably carried out the duties of M.C.
