PERSONAL AND SOCIAL

Mrs North, Albany street, kindly allowed the Otago Association of the New Zealand Federation of University Women to meet in her home last evening, where Mr Charles A. Martin, Mus. Bac., delivered a lecture on “ The Music of Germany,” the association having been making a study of Germany for the past week. Mr Martin took his audience on an instructive tour through the great eras of German music, beginning with Bach, Handel, and Gluck (the first trinity), and Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven (the second trinity), and then entering the nineteenth century, where the masters of the artsong—Schubert, Weber, and Mendelssohn —Berlioz and his perfection of programme music, Liszt of the symphonic poems, Wagner who created the national mtisic drama, Brahms on whom it was said the mantle of Beethoven descended, and Strauss hated by some and loved by others, held sway, the lecture ending with a description of Schonberg, the maker of “ new music.” Mr Martin then played a number of gramophone records to ilius~ trate the works of the musicians with whom he had been concerned, the result being such as to give the audience a comprehensive idea of German music. At the close of . his lecture Mr Martin wasi accorded a sincere vote of thanks by -Miss Marion Fyfe, president, who also thanked Mrs North for her hospitality.' Mr Martin gave a very favourable impression ot modern Germany, speaking highly of the country for its hospitality, ami sincerity, and saying that its present efforts were being made in order to let it recover itself, not from a military, but from a cultural, point of view.
