He stated that the local committee, in order to retain the hospital for the district, had practically guaranteed to the Otago Hospital Board that the expenses of running the hospital would not exceed £6OO per annum. It xvae, therefore, with the object of assisting to bridge the deficiency in revenue that the senes of entertainments just concluded were instituted. He thanked all present for their loyal support, which, he was pleased to say, would now enable the committee to meet all its commitments. Mr George Peat, who supplied the music for < the whole series of dances, was presented with a, new violin case. LAWN TENNIS. The opening, of the new lawn tennis courts of the Sutton Club was held pn Saturday. The weather was fine and there was a record attendance of members and, friends as well as a very large number of visitors from the Middlemarch Club and the surrounding district. Mr Kinsman outlined the steps that had been taken to secure the ground for the new courts, and paid a; tribute to the efforts of the late Mr, W. M. Matheweon, who assisted with the necessary negotiations between the club and the Otago Education Board. He also mentioned that the club was greatly indebted to Mr R, A. Johnstone, the leasee of the ground, who had willingly forgone any claim for compensation. He further pointed out that the success which they had now attained m securing the grounds was due in a very great measure to the unfailing efforts and enthusiasm of the president of the club (Mrs E J. Docherty). Mr Kinsman then cut the tape arid declared the courts open. The first ball was put over the net by the president, and games between the button and Middlemarch visitors were played.
