YOUNG MEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS. The monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Young Men’s Christian Association was held on Monday night, the following being present:—Messrs J. L. Salmond (in the chair), J. M‘Ara, C. J. Darracott, J. Y. Lovfe, J. B. Waters, P. Findlay, T. Conly,' H. P. West, Rev. C. G. Wilcox, Rev. W. A. Hnmblett, and the general secretary (J. H. Don Miller). Mr C. J. Darracott presented the financial statements, which were reviewed and adopted. A large portion of the evening was spent dealing with business in connection with the £3OOO appeal which is at present being carried out. Encouraging reports from all aides had been received. The general secretary (Mr J. H. Don Miller) reported as follows: The young men’s division continued to grow in service and enthusiasm, and nad been one of the real features of progress this year. The lecture groups, cabinet meetings, and general activities were well supported. There was an improvement in residence which could be realised in the increased takings for the month. A reunion of all residents and exresidents, the first of its kind held in the association, was attended by men from all parts. The Optimists’ Club had had increased attendances and enthusiasm this year. Speakers had been the general secretary on “Aviculture” and Professor Adams on "Greek Culture.” A great deal of time had been required in getting the baths into satisfactory condition. The general secretary’s plan of improvement had been greatly approved by the Zenith Club. The religious aspect of the work continued to pervade all activities. —The report was adopted.
Mr C. W. Postgate (phj'sical director) reported that the attendance at the various classes had been well maintained, the total attendances being 773. Good attendances had been recorded at the unemployed sessions, , held daily in the gymnasium. Between 50 and 60 youths had already received benefit from these classes. —The report was adopted. Mr G. R. Pitkethley (boys' work director) reported that the total membership was now 205. There had been an aggregate attendance since April of 7583, this being a daily average of 52. During the first week of the school holidays a party of 20 boys from Timaru Y.M.C.A. had spent four days in Dunedin. The monthly visit was held to First Church, when there were 75 boys present. The results of the indoor athletic contest for the boys’ division of New Zealand were to hand. Palmerston North was first with 17 points, Dunedin second with 8 points, and Christchurch third with 6 points.—The report was adopted.
