OBITUARY

MRS J. E. O'DWYER (Pee' United Pbess Association.) I BLENHEIM, September 24. The death occurred this morning of Mrs Jane Evans O'Dwyer, aged 86 years, a daughter of .Mr T. J. Thompson, one of the surveyors concerned in the events which led up to the Wairau massacre of June, 1843, and the widow of Mr James ,o'Dwyer, a Spring Creek farmer, who arrived at Nelson with his people in 1842. He died in 1904, and Mrs O'Dwyer had resided since in Blenheim, where she was very highly respected. She was a perfect mine of information concerning old Marlborough and Nelson history, and possessed many interesting relics of the pioneering days. The surviving relatives are Mr H. P. Thompson, of Moutere, Nelson; Messrs T. K., E. D., and F. M. Thompson, of Auckland; Mr V. Thompson, of Kaitaia; and Mrs L. H. Sheat, of Blenheim. MRS J. BYERS There passed away on September 13 at her residence, Edendale, an early and highly respected resident of Hunt's Road, near Owaka, in the person of Mrs J. Byers. The deceased with her husband settled at Hunt's Road about 40 years ago, when they set about hewing a home out of the dense bush. Here they resided for about 18 years, -when they sold out and removed to Edendale. - Mrs Byers was well known for her hospitality and her help in times of trouble and Bickness. She was predeceased a few years ago by her husband and her youngest son, Mr Walter Byers, and leaves one son, Mr William Byers, of Eden'dale, and one daughter, Mrs A. Tapp, of Awatea.
