THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam, aut faciam." DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1862. Shipping Intelligence.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

PORT CHARMERS, September' 23ep, The barque Cincinnati, from Newcastle, arrived oS the heads jn the forenoon, and is now on her way up channel. She is coal laden, for the supply of the steam' service of the port, and has also about twenty passengers, including the members of the Buckingham family, whose arrival is an acquisition to the entertainments of Dunedin. ... With reference. to a Sydney telegram which appears in the latest Melbourne papers, it is stated by Captain Hayes, who is on board, that the Sydney passengers referred to had declined to accept the accommodation which it was originally agreed they should have on board. , [Captain Hayes (to give him his full name, William Henry) was a no less personage than the notorious f Bully Hayes,'' known unfavourably over a large extent of the southern seas. The Cincinnati was in a bad state, and the passengers had an, unpleasant experience. The telegraphic reference was to an allegation that Hayes had received passage money from Sydney people intending to come to Otago and that he had gone olt without them. All things considered, the story of the disappointed passengers is the more likely to be the true version of the affair. The Cincinnati found her last resting place in Otago Harbour. She was badly strained on the voyage from Newcastle, grounded on a bank, was condemned by the shipping authorities, and became a coal hulk at Port Chalmers. “ Bully ” Hayes went to Arrow, started an hotel, married Miss Rosie Buckingham, and left there, as elsewhere, an unsavoury reputation. He afterwards lived for a time at Carey's Bay, finally disappearing overboard during a fight in the 1 Pacific Ocean with a Dutch sailor. —-Ed.
