HAMPDEN WATER SUPPLY
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Your correspondent “ Constant Dripping ” appears to be a little annoyed over my reply to his letter of the 16th inst. His letter in yesterday's issue is an attempt to get away from the bulk of the suggestions in his first letter. I wish to point out that he has only stood by one of his suggestions in the matter of finance. The meaning I have taken from the first letter is similar to that given to it by a number of other readers. Hampden may need a water supply, and might, in his opinion, stand heavier rating, but at an election of councillors some time back, when the water scheme was much in evidence, the ratepayers showed their opinion of the matter by returning a council composed chiefly of the candidates who were not in favour of the water scheme. —I am, etc., The Younger Generation. Hampden, September 22. to the editor. Sir, —Would it be too much to ask “Constant Dripping” to take the criticism of his letter by “ The Younger Generation” without losing his temper? His letter in Saturday’s issue certaiply deserved the reply which it received. If it was not intended to be interpreted in such a way, why all the fuss about the visitors wearing out the swings and generally taking a loan of the place? That part would have been better left out, as it will make many of the visitors wonder whether they are welcome to spend their holiday in the district. If the holiday traffic was cut out there would be a considerable drop in the turnover of the establishments that cater for these people, and as the bulk of the visitors are supporters of the water scheme, “ Constant Dripping ” will have less backers than ever to give their assistance to his hobby.—l am, etc., Fairplay. Hampden. September 22.
