CRICKET

UNIVERSITY CLUB The annual meeting of the University Cricket Club was held last night in the Students’ Union Hall. The president (Mr F. M. Hanan) was chairman, and there was a large attendance of members. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, said it was very pleasing to see such a large attendance, especially of the young members. Referring to the past season, he said it was the most successful year of the club to date, and one of which they were all proud. The club had been in existence for only four years, and it now held a prominent place in the cricket world of Otago. The senior team was to b§ congratulated on its performance last year, as it was runner-up in the competition. This spoke well for _ the standard of play and the enthusiasm shown by the members of the team. The club had suffered a great loss during the year by the death of Sir, Thomas Bidey, who had always taken a keen interest in the club. They all deplored the tragic death of Edgar S. Russell, who was one of the club’s outstanding players. The playing members had increased during the year, and the prospects for the future were particularly bright. The club had fielded three teams. Some of last season s batting performances were very meritorious. It was unfortunate that the club was not in a particularly healthy position financially, but they had managed to carry on. The club had to thank the University Students’ Association executive for the assistance given every year. The grant made by the executive to the funds was very acceptable, and but for this grant the club would not be in the position.it held to-day. In seconding the motion, Mr A. Ibbotson congratulated members on the position they had attained in last season s competitions. The club had every reason to be grateful for the keen interest shown by members, and it was very satisfactory to know that several members had been selected to represent Otago.
