HITLER’S IRON CROSS
, BLUFFING THE FRENCH. A Berlin newspaper recently revealed how Herr Hitler won his Iron Cross. It was during the autumn campaign near La Bassee and Arras in 1915. Hitler and another soldier named Weiss were on patrol duty, and were, endeavouring to find out where the nearest brench troops were. , The two men crept into an apparently deserted village. Suddenly French voices were heard coming from the cellar of a wrecked house. Hitler opened the door, called out in broken French that.« Herman company was. behind, him and'summoned the French soldiers to surrender.
Then, says the newspaper, giving commands to the non-existent ebrapauy, he completely bluffed the French, and a lieutenant .and 20 soldiers .emerged r with their bands up and surrendered to Hitler and bis companion, who escorted them to their Bavarian regiment.. . ’
