(Per United Press Association.) «, AUCKLAND, September 22. A fire at Helcnsville at 4 o’clock this morning destroyed the Foresters’ Hall and StannawayVgrocery store. An adjoining house owned by Mr Beecroft was saved after the furniture had been removed by the fire-fighters. The hall, which had been recently modernised, was vacated three hours before the fire by those who attended a “ back to childhood” party. It and the store were each insured for £4OO in the Guardian and New Zealand offices. CHRISTCHURCH, September 22. The ferry steamer Maori, which arrived at Lyttelton from Wellington at 7.40 a.m. to-day, encountered rough conditions in Cook Strait, including strong southerly winds and heavy seas. After Andrew Carney, aged 31, a labourer, had pleaded guilty of attempted theft from a shop, the police told the court it was significant that when caught near the counter the accused was wearing canvas shoes with rubber soles. He was remanded for a week.
