NOTES ON THE RACING

(Feom Our Special Reporter.) TIMARU. September 21. The Geraldine meeting was opened in fine weather, but the latter part of the card was got off in a decided change to wintry weather, .The track was firm and in good order, and an excellent attendance put in an appearance, but visitors from Christchurch and Dunedin were not in such strong force as usual. A disappointing field appeared in the Geraldine Cup, and only two had a say at the finish. Chrysology made the running to the straight, then put in a weak response when challenged _by Ranelagh, who had been kept judiciously waiting until the business end. . After the Raukapuka Handicap G. Humphries was cautioned, for interfering with Dracula. and C. Eastwood was suspended for hitting Humphries with his whip after passing the post. The seven on the card for the First Hurdles went to the post. Tea Garden was made favourite, and again went out to set a solid pace. He was in charge passing the stand hurdle Hystride and Don Jose, with Advance Camp next. Don Jose went up to Tea Garden as they turned into the back, and in company they raced away from the rest of the field. Tea Garden and Don Jose came at the last hurdle together, and in a hard finish Don Jose stayed on best and won by three-parts of a length,. Advance Camp was six lengths away, with Hystride next, another two lengths furtliGr back They went solidly for Cherry Queen and Gaysome in the Opahi Hack Handicap. Creaseless caused delay, but they finally got away from a fair line. Gaysome, Delice, and Cherry Queen were smartest away, and they led to the far turn and round the top from Top Rank and Cheap Money. Delice led into the straight, where Gaysome and Cherry Queen went wide. Once well in line for home Gaysome finished on well and beat Delice by a length. Top Rank was two lengths away third, a length in front of Cherry Queen, and then came Davalo and Helen Gold, with a well strung out lot behind them. Cherry Queen drew 14 at the barrier, but got fairly well away, and was handy, but lost ground at the turn through hanging out, and Gaysome also went wide.

Backers confined their attention _to Chrysology and Ranelagh in the Geraldine Cup. Chrysology at once took charge, and led Ranelagh and Martian Chief out of the straight. Racing along the hack Chrysology was running in front alone, three lengths ahead of Ranelagh, who was going well, and the others were then too far out at six furlongs to have a chance. Ranelagh closed on Chrysology at the home turn and had him beaten well over a furlong from home. Ranelagh came on_ to win by a length and a-half. Martian Chief was five lengths away third, and another three in front of Kakara. Chrysology did not show much fight when challenged by the winner. - Titri and Guy Junior were taken out of the Geraldine Trot. Dandy Locanda, Garry Thorpe, Clem Dawe, and Happy Bird were the early leaders, and they formed the leading division to the stand, where Marie Celeste had joined the leaders. Marie Celeste was in charge along the back and led Clem Dawe, Dandy Locanda, and Happy Bird to the straight, With Wee Wrack coming fast. Marie Celeste kept going and won comfortably by three lengths from Clem Dawe, who beat Wee Wrack by four lengths. Royal Sceptre ledjiur- ■ lingham into the straight, where Kerbside ran wide. Hurlingham came on and won nicely by a length and a-half from Errantry. Irish Lancer was finishing on in third place and got up to beat Royal Sceptre. Great Star was running last most of the way. Grand Finale, Manetho, Royal Amphora, and Draeula were well backed tor the Ruakapu Handicap. Pharoah, Manetho, Draeula, Denise, Royal Amphora, and Eupator were smartest away and Grand Finale was close up with them. At the six furlong post Draeula got sent back, and Royal Amphora, Manetho, Denise, Eupator, and Grand Finale was the order going to the far turn. Royal Amphora led Manetho into the straight Horn Eunator and Denise, with Grand imale a couple of lengths away.' Manetho wore down Royal Amphora, and won by a head. Grand Finale was two lengths away. Atralette was about two lengths away, and then Am-olis and Rewai next. Yankeeland, who lost ground at the start, was coupled with Atralette. A mild hostile demonstration greeted the winner on his return to the birdcage. Sir Gowan did not go away at the start of his first race owing to a horse breaking in front ° f Spoon and Nightly were evenly backed in the Belfield Handicap. Gallant Fox took up the running, and led Rational 11, Spoon, and Nightly along the back. Gallant Fox led Rational II and Nightly into the straight.
