QUEENSTOWN NOTES

CENTRAL OTAGO

(From Odb Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, September 20. THE WEATHER. The temperatures have been much milder during the week. A slight shower of rain last evening gave a great impetus to growth. The following are the readings for the week ended September 17:—

After a lapse of several years, the oldtime Arbor Day was revived here last Wednesday. Many years ago Arbor Day j was looked upon as one of the most important fixtures of the year, especially j for the school children, who, perhaps, were j less mindful of the necessity for planting trees than of the picnic provided for them. The recent observance of Arbor Day was a fitting one. Some 160 children marched in procession behind the Queenstown Brass Band to the camping ground, where 350 Douglas spruce were planted, i The Mayor (Mr W. H. Overton) addressed the children on the value of tree planting. The greater part of the afternoon was devoted to children’s sports. CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING. An interclub match for the Dewar Cup took place on Saturday between Wanaka and Queenstown Gun Clubs. The conditions were 21 birds off the 15yds mark. The match resulted in a win for Wanaka Club by 73 to 64 birds. The light was not good, otherwise higher scores would have been registered. Mr J. Munro (Wakatipu Club) formally handed over the cup to Mr L. Mann and congratulated the winners. The Wakatipu Gun Club has decided to procure a shield to be known as the Curtis Memorial Shield in memory of the late Mr L. Curtis, who was an enthusiastic member of the club. This will be competed for annually by the members. GOLF. The Men’s Golf Championship is nearing completion. Griffin won from Cooke last week 4 up and S to play. Griffin will now meet Farrant in the final. During the week the Knock-out Competition was brought to a close, Murchison winning from Farrant 2 up and 1 to play. The first qualifying round for the Ladies’ Championship will be played on Saturday. The Hislop Cup for the best net scores in the round will be run in conjunction with the championship round. WARDEN’S COURT. Mining activity in the district was reflected in the Warden’s Court last week. Close on 50 applications for various mining privileges were brought before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M. Most of them were granted or recommended to the Minister of Mines. An application by Joseph Stephens for a claim at the Branches, Skippers, was again thrown out. mainly on account of insufficient pegging. Counsel for one of the objectors (W. S. Reid), whose country would be affected by the holding area, asked for compensation for the loss ofimprovements, roadways, etc., but the warden said that compensation could' be claimed only on the improvements that were affected, such as wooden structures, etc. The land itself, he said, was liable for resumption at any time for mining purposes. ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. The principal business dealt with at the meeting of the_ council of the Lakes District Acclimatisation Society last week arose out of a letter from the Otago Sociey conveying a request of the Upper Clutha Anglers’ Association that the present boundaries between Otago and the Lakes societies be altered so that Otago would take in the whole of the-watershed of Lake Wanaka and Upper Clutha, It was stated that there was a general wish in the Wanaka district to secede from Lakes and go into Otago. At present, most of the game and fishing licenses were taken out in Otago, thus robbing the Lakes Society of a good deal of revenue.—The president (Dr W. Anderson) and several of the members spoke in opposition to the move of the Anglers’ Club, for if this portion were cut off the Lakes area, the local society would probably have to give up its work. However, the Otago Society looked upon the Lakes Society k as a friendly neighbour and bad-no wish to antagonise it. —It was decided to write to the Otago Society explaining the Lakes Society’s difficulties, and suggesting that some mutual arrangement might be come to regarding the issue of licenses for both angling and game shooting. , The sum of £l3 -yvas received for 23 game licenses last season. GENERAL.

The Borough Council is at present planting 4000 trees —pinus ponderosa and Douglas spruce—on the Peninsula. Unemployed labour is being used. The trees came from Hanmer and Rotorua., The Wakatipu Defence Rifle Club held its annual meeting last Friday evening. The attendance was small, and Deputypresident A. Simaon presided. The balance sheet showed a considerable deficit owing largely to the heavy expense m constructing the new range and new targets. The club had now one of the best ranges in the South Island. Mr H. Mackenzie was re-elected president, and Mr A. Simson deputy-president. Mr D. R. Gray was re-elected secretary and treasurer, and the usual committees were appointed. The season will be officially opened on September 30. The Wakatipu Bowling Club and Lawn Tennis Club will hold their annual meetings on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
