COTTON THE FAVOURITE,

LONDON, September 19. Cotton is favourite for the News of the World tournament, the first round of which was completed on the hilly Purley Downs course in the Surrey Hills. A big crowd followed his dingdong _ fight with the Irishman Nolan, who did so well in the early stages of the Open Championship. It was touch and go all the way. They were all square at the thirteenth, but Nolan lost through his approaches overrunning the last two greens. ' The biggest surprise was the defeat of Perry, who reached the final in 1932. Rees nearly threw the match away after being 2up with 3to play. Padgham, one of the strongest challengers, did the first nine holes in 32. He gave a delightful display of smooth and controlled hitting. C. A. Whitcombe began brilliantly with 3,4, 3,2, 3, which is six under bogey. He took only 31 for the first nine holes, yet he was only 2 up. He later won four successive holes.
