TROTTING

By Sentinel.

Nominations for the New Zealand TrotTng Cup will close at noon on Thursday of next .week. Besides Muriel de Oro, Golden Direct, Tangatu, General Sarsfield. and George Bey, F. G. Holmes is working a likelylooking mare by Man o’- War from Hannan if, also a brother to Golden Direct. Among the horses who are in work at Addington at present there are nearly 40 with engagements at Methven at the end of next, week. From present indications the Methven meeting should; be very suecessfu I. .Margaret Chenault is again in regular work under the care of. G. Mouritz. bhe looks well after her spell. The same trainer has Prince Chenault in commission, and he should race prominently later in the season. ' ‘ , , , Few horses racing in New Zealand have experienced a more interesting career than Mr Penalty. Bred in Canada, Mr Penalty, who' is by Penalty from Osena,,was imported to Auckland just under three years ago by F. J. Smith. He had a pacing record of approximately 2min 20sec, but when placed in work at Epsom he made no progress with the straps, and Smith decided to test him at the trotting gait, with successful results. At Te Aroha in May, ID3B he won the Waihou Handicap from end to end, and at Epsom, in the following month he ran second to Kio Grande in. the Royal Handicap. Purchased later by Mrs J. W. Murphy, of Wellington, Mr Penalty joined J. S. Shaw’s stable, and after an early return at trotting did well as .'a pacer. At the Hawera, Taranaki, and Wanganui meetings in 1932 he won three races, including the Wanganui Cup, and was narrowly beaten by Sister Rose in the Taranaki Cup. At Te Aroha shortly afterwards he made a gallant attempt to win the principal race, being very narrowly beaten by Kewpie a Guy Very little was heard of Mr Penalty* last season, but he has come well forward’ as a trotter again this season.

The two trotting events to be decided at the Geraldine meeting to-day have drawn excellent fields, which should provide interesting contests. Horses likely to be backed are Six' Gowan, Social Pest, and Red Gold in the Geraldine Handicap, and Shore Leave, Compass,. and Ivan de Oro in the Orari Handicap. _ Sir Gowan has yet to live up to the standard he set in training .by working a mile and a-half in 3min 21 3-ssec j two-year-old, and there can he no doubt that one day he will do so, He has developed into a robust three-year-old, and although he has not been setting the Thames on fire at Addington lately, it is evident from his condition that he has done sufficient work to enable him to play a prominent part in the settlement of Geraldine events. ,
