How many people know that the note «f Big Ben is faulty? asks an English writer. This famous bell cracked soon after it was placed in position, and was out of use for some years. Then it was partially turned round,. so that the hammer strokes—it is struck by a hammer, instead of being swung, to produce its note—should fall on' a different expanse of metal. The result is; the note whioh Londoners know—and which Britons all over the world have learned to love. Now, however, a proposal has been made that the bell should be taken down and recast, so that there should be a “true” note instead of the one to which people have grown accustomed. Fortunately, to take down the bell would he an expensive business, and, as these are days of economy, it is probable that this will save the Big Ben that is so veil known.
