AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING OF OTAGO CENTRE The monthly meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association was held last evening in the Y.M.C.A. The president (Mr E. L. Macassey) was in the chair. The chairman made reference to the death of Mr C. Heaton’s mother, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr Heaton. The Cycling Centre passed on a letter which had been received from the secretary of the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club applying for n gold medal for fastest time in the 56-mile Southland Road Championship to be held on October 7. —Mr J. A, Johnston, in moving that the medal be presented, stated that this was the first time the club had applied for assistance and that the race was open. Otago riders would probably be competing.—lt was decided to grant the medal. It was decided to make application to the Caledonian Society that the time for training be extended to 8.30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Tlmrsdays. Mr H. T. Emmerson wrote resigning from the position of sports secretary.— Mr Macassey made reference to the work Mr Emmerson had done for the centre and expressed regret that Mr Emmerson had found it necessary to give up the position.—Several other members also spoke and it was decided that Mr Emmerson’s resignation he received with regret.—Mr C. M'Donnell was appointed the new sports secretary. Advice was received from the Wellington Centre that the date of the Marathon Race had not yet been fixed, but it would probably be held at the end of January or in conjunction with the New Zealand Track Championships to be held in February.—lt was decided that the centre was still of the opinion that the Marathon should be held in November, although this year it would now probably have to be held later. A letter was received from the secretary of the Anglican Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club intimating that his club intended to participate in the scratch racing to be held during the summer season. An application was received from W. Smith for transfer from the Leith to the Caversham Club. —Granted. An interesting address -was given by Mr B. R. B'Kernan, manager of the Otago team, on the New Zealand Cross-country championship held at Wanganui on August 26. Mr J. J. Morris reported on the Harrier Conference held at Wanganui. It was decided that unless an athlete were registered he would not be allowed to compete at any meeting controlled by the Otago Centre. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on October 17. The New Zealand Council advised that the New Zealand Track Championship would be held at Wellington on February 16 and 17. It was decided to advise the Canterbury Centre that Otago was in favour of Canterbury’s suggestion to hold a track meeting between the two provinces. The meeting would bo held % this year at Dunedin, in December or* January, and the date would be fixed later. Mr Bennett advised that the date for the Lovelock Commemoration meeting had not vet been fixed, but it would probably be held on October 21. A. function would also be held in the evening. Mr Bennett said he thought that efforts should be made this season for a cooperative training scheme between the clubs, especially in the field events. -It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mr Bennett and Mr R. O. Johnston to prepare a scheme and report at the annual meeting. In recognition of J. E. Lovelock s outstanding performance in establishing a new world record in the one mile the New Zealand Council forwarded photographs of three stages of the race to be handed to Mrs Lovelock. The New Zealand Council understood that Mrs Lovelock had not been enjoying the best of health, and it wished the Otago Centre to convey the council’s sincere wishes for a speedy and completed recovery.—Received. It was moved by Mr J. J. Morns that ns the races in the harrier season were too far apart’ and runners were unable to retain their best form for the crosscountry that it be recommended to the Dunedin Club to hold the Edmond Cup later in the season.—After some discussion the motion was withdrawn in favour of Mr R. Malone’s amendment— That the Harrier Sub-committee be asked to submit a report on the harrier season at the annual meeting.”—The amendment was carried. ______
