AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE
A VOLUNTARY SCHEME MEN ENLISTING READILY. SYDNEY, September 13. Australian defence necessities have loomed large lately in the public eye. Mr W. M. Hughes is prominent, and is talking of organising a Citizens’ Defence League to arouse the people to a proper appreciation of the danger in the event of an international blaze developing. The military authorities favour a voluntary scheme as opposed to compulsory country units. The compulsory system, dropped by the Scullin Government in 1929, is now being revived on a voluntary basis, and men are enlisting readily and preparing for terms of training with the existing city forces.
